Who we are
At the beginning of 2009 the Union had
7 000 members.
Of the members
- 63 % are women and 37 % are men
- 20 % are students and 6 % are pensioners
Of the members
- 54 % are chemists
- 31 % are graduates in Biochemistry or Biotechnology
- 15 % took biological or other natural sciences as their main subject of study. The proportion of these members is clearly rising: in 2002, representatives of the biological sciences accounted for as much as 25 % of membership.
Degree levels
- Bachelor?s/Master?s degree: 79 %.
- Licentiate: 6 %
- PhD: 15 %.
What we do and where
Of the members of the Finnish Union of Experts in Science
- 51 % are employed in the private sector,
- 39 % are employed at state level in the public sector and
- 10 % are employed at municipal level in the public sector.
The main employer in the private sector is the Chemical Industry Federation of Finland; in the public sector it was universities. Around 1,000 employers are recorded in the Union?s register of members.
