International Fulbright Science and Technology Award for the academic year 2012-2013
The United States Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) announces a worldwide grant competition for candidates planning to complete a full Ph.D. degree in the United States in the fields of Science and Technology. Approximately 40 awards will be offered worldwide for candidates who demonstrate unique aptitude and innovation in scientific fields. The Fulbright Center nominates up to three Finnish candidates for the worldwide competition.
All grantees receive tuition, a monthly stipend for up to 36 months, health and accident coverage, a book and equipment allowance, research allowance, professional conference allowance, travel support, and specially tailored enrichment activities, and are eligible to apply for additional research funding. After three years, U.S. universities will be expected to cover the remaining study expenses toward completion of a PhD.
Applicants are not expected to have an admission to a U.S. university at the grant application stage. The university application process will be handled on the student's behalf by the Institute of International Education (IIE).
Eligible fields of study for the International Fulbright Science and Technology Award include:
1. Aeronautics and aeronautics and astronomics/aeronautical engineering
2. Agriculture (theoretical or research-based focus only)
3. Astronomy/planetary sciences
4. Biology
5. Biomedical engineering
6. Chemistry
7. Computer sciences/engineering
8. Energy
9. Engineering (electrical, chemical, civil, mechanical, ocean, and petroleum)
10. Environmental science/engineering
11. Geology/earth and atmospheric sciences
12. Information sciences and systems (engineering focus only)
13. Materials science/engineering
14. Mathematics
15. Neurosciences
16. Oceanography
17. Public health (theoretical research focus only)
18. Physics
Eligibility requirements
1. Applicants must be citizens of Finland. Citizens of other countries should contact the Fulbright Program in the country of their citizenship.
2. Candidates currently residing or studying in the United States are ineligible.
3. Applicants must have completed an undergraduate degree before August 1, 2012.

Jenny ja Antti Wihurin rahasto on merenkulkuneuvos Antti Wihurin ja hänen puolisonsa Jenny Wihurin vuonna 1942 perustama yleishyödyllinen kulttuurisäätiö, joka vuosittain jakaa apurahoja suomalaisen henkisen ja taloudellisen viljelyn edistämiseen. Kohdealoina ovat kulttuurin eri alat.
Tieteen apurahat ensisijaisesti väitöskirjatyöhön, sen jälkeiseen tutkimukseen ja tutkimusryhmille. Vuonna 2010 apurahoja jaettiin kaikkiaan 9,7 miljoonaa euroa. Seuraava hakuaika on toukokuussa. Lisätietoja ja hakulomakkeita on saatavilla osoitteesta www.wihurinrahasto.fi
